Good Morning lovelies! Today I have one of the most awesome Miss Independent's, mama Cristin Brisbee Priest of Simplified Bee from San Francisco!
Cristin is all about organizing space, and also offers virtual design kits, allowing her to work with people all over the country! She would make a great consultant for anyone looking to organize their home.
1.
What made you decide to start your own business?
My kids {and
their stuff} were the catalyst behind the need for functional design. While
studying interior design at a local college and creating clever ways to keep my
kids’ toys orderly, I had an “a-ha” moment to combine the disciplines of
interior design and organizing. Thus in January of 2009, I launched Simplified
Bee®. I believe that surrounding yourself in beautiful, organized spaces
reduces stress, makes you happier and inspires healthier living.
Not long after,
my first client encouraged me to get a “web presence.” Because I didn’t have
any marketing money for a website she suggested blogging.
I thought “I’m not a blogger; I don’t even read blogs.” But, after a few months
I decided to start a blog under the company name, Simplified Bee®. It was
intended to be a placeholder for a website down the road, but here I am still
blogging almost three years later! Blogging became an amazing outlet for me
both creatively and educationally. And to my surprise and delight, a world
opened up that has brought wonderful friendships across the US and abroad.
2.
What was your biggest risk or fear about starting a business?
Failing
3.
How did you know what you wanted to do?
I didn’t always
know what I wanted to do. At first, I worked for high-tech companies planning
events and directing marketing programs. After my first child was born in 2002,
I took time as stay-at-home mom. This gave me the opportunity to reflect on
what I really wanted to do. I’ve always had a passion for interior design, but
decided to take it to the next level and go back to school to learn more.
4.
What support system do you have for your business to help you stay motivated?
My friends and
family have been very supportive of my business from the start. Working with
clients is very satisfying for me and keeps me motivated. As for writing my
blog, readers and fellow blogs inspire me. Their support has been tremendous.
5. What
is your biggest challenge about running your own business?
It’s just me at
this point and that’s the toughest part. I’ve had to turn away potential
clients and opportunities, because I simply don’t have the bandwidth. Striking
a work – life balance is also a challenge. I could easily work seven days a
week. This year I added “unplug on Sundays” as one of my resolutions. I’ve had
to break it once, but try hard to just relax that day.
6.
What is the best advice you have for someone wanting to start a business?
Be yourself.
Well there you have it! I really love her idea of "unplugging" one day a week... I wish I could start doing that! Thanks again to Cristin over at Simplified Bee!
